Anonymous said: What kind of suits are ya likin' for this summah? xoxo Maura
Quick note to all you salecandiers - I’m on a brief hiatus due to general busy-ness with a new job but I’ll be back ASAP!
As for swimsuits! I am really loving underwire bikini tops lately - my favorites are actually from Land’s End, like this stripe twist bikini top ($39, from $55). I almost never by a matching bottom unless I’m really in love with the print. I prefer to accumulate some trusty bottoms in basic colors (black, navy) that I feel comfortable in and look good in, rather then try to make whatever strippity-strappity thing has the same print as the top work for me. Another fun fit is a longline style like this tropical floral print top from Aerie ($34.99).
Here is something exciting though: the one piece is having a moment right now. Which is awesome cause sometimes I wanna curl up on a lounge chair and fall asleep or run at full speed into a wave or try some yoga handstands on the beach or sit pretzel-style on a towel playing Uno and not have to constantly worry about my lady bits escaping their nylon prison. A bunch are on sale from J. Crew right now: love this one ($89.99), this one ($89.99), this one ($59.99), plus take 30% off all of them with code SWEET. Target also has some nice one-piece action going on. I own this florescent one-piece in that excellent bright orange color ($22.99). The neckline on this striped one is so pin-up girl ($34.99). The cutouts on this black swimsuit ($39.99) and this printed one ($24.99) are p sexy.
Hope you get some good ideas! :*

If you’re like me, you watched The Mindy Project’s finale last night and saw this outfit and went OOOOOOH I LIKE IT. I assume you are all exactly like me. Welp there is both good and bad news for people like us. The bad news is that the skirt is custom (see her tweet above) and the necklace she is actually wearing costs $815. The GREAT news is that the Bella baseball tee she’s got is just $11 (I bought it) and you can dupe this look with any sequin pencil skirt (for example, this ASOS pencil skirt, just $26) and any statement necklace, like this Lou Lou Tomb Raider Necklace ($30). I stayed in the green and navy family for this dupe, but you could play around with it - she gives you a great jumping off point. Go neutral in the baseball tee, then match your blingin’ skirt to your fancy necklace. Thanks Dr. Lahiri!

This little Gogo Phillip etched heart necklace ($17.15 on ASOS) reminds me of waffles and I love it for that reason.

The new Nordstrom Rack website launched recently, and as a huge fan of the store I was super excited about it. I still think you’ll find better scores in-store, but I’ve seen some deeply discounted designed stuff, like the above alice + olivia drop-waist sleeveless dress ($119, from $275). A splurge, but damn it’s cute (I love the snakeskin heels, too).

Anonymous said: I just got a new job and now I'm looking to buy some basic and versatile pieces to wear. It'll be hot where I live, so I'm thinking layers are my best bet. The office wears a more business-y, dress-y attire than I'm used to. I don't know where to start!!
CONGRATS! That’s awesome.
Building a work wardrobe can be overwhelming, but it’s great to hear you are looking for versatile pieces. Focusing on fit is also a good place to start. Also, think of places that do the whole work attire thing: LOFT, J. Crew, H&M, Zara, Gap, Banana Republic. You’re not gonna find a pair of appropriate pants at Urban Outfitters so don’t even bother.
Pants are important. A comfortable and well-fitting pair of work pants can be as easy to wear as jeans, I swear. You just have to try on every size and shape imaginable. (And I mean every size. I find the petite sizes at LOFT fit me better than the regular sizes, and I never shop petite, ever.) A black ponte pant might be your best bet, like the popular J. Crew Pixie pants ($98) or Minnie pants ($69.50). The LOFT Marisa pants ($69.50) are the same general shape but more structured. I find dark bottoms easier to wear - maybe get a pair or two in black, one in dark gray. Navy is also a good option. Buying the best pair of slacks you find is good sense regardless of the price, if you will wear them constantly. And the cool gross thing is that black pants are never visibly dirty!
Please wash your black pants more often than I do. Oh god.
Now you need a few tops that work with the pants. Bring the pants into the dressing room and try on some dressier shirts. Also, put on the pants and try on the tops already in your closet. You’ll find things that work. Generally, stay away from things that require excessive tucking, it never looks as nice as you want it to. Sheer tops will also give you a headache because goddamnit where did I put that little cami thingy *rifles through all of the drawers forever and ever amen* so keep that in mind too. I like a dressier top that ends at hip-length like this H&M wraparound blouse ($29.95). Button-downs are great too as long as the fit is neat (right sleeve length, buttons not gaping at the bosom, etc, etc). Have a few sleeveless shells on hand too, to pair with cardigans - I like this H&M sleeveless blouse ($24.95). WE’LL GET TO CARDIGANS IN A MOMENT.
(Here’s a secret: I don’t really bother with skirts. It’s too much for me in the morning to select a pencil skirt, a top and/or sweater to match, shoes that work. No thanks. I focus pretty much exclusively on pants/tops and dresses and it makes my life easier but to each her own.)
OK. Dresses. ANOTHER SECRET: I often buy work dresses at DressBarn. I really hate the name and resent the implication (it’s a barn, making me a cow or pig) but the price is right, man! And the styles are cute. Look at this textured pocket dress ($50), this polka-dot faux wrap dress ($40), this neutral floral dress ($44). Also, nothing is too short or too boobtastic, which I appreciate. So head over to the D-Barn (let’s make that a thing) and pick up some easy-to-wear dresses.
OKAY TWO MORE BRIEF PARTS TO THIS. I swear. Hold on we’re going home. You’re gonna want some cardigans. You can get these anywhere. List the dresses and tops you have, and from there think of the colors that will work best. And also, shoes. Look for shoes that are both neutral and fantastic. Example: these black Chinese Laundry snake D’Orsay flats ($29.94). Shoes that are simple and match with everything but still might make your cubemate be like, “those are GREAT.” If you can wear sandals, try something with a clean shape and a small heel like these Nine & Co. wedge sandals ($29.99) or this Nine West Tertia sandal ($59.99).
WHEW. That’s my advice: keep it basic, keep it simple, keep it clean. And above all keep it easy because girl when that alarm clock rings you aren’t going to want to “see if you can find a bra that works with that one dress” NOOO NO. NO. Give me a basic navy shift dress, a gray cardigan and nude flats and I am flying out the door at mach speed with half a scone in my mouth.

I like the length and ruching on these American Rag printed harem pants ($29.99 plus 25% off, code MOM, at Macy’s). PS I am of the firm opinion that these pants only look good with heels or sandals.

This ASOS cropped tee is just $13.17 and looks great with a high-waisted skirt. Easy summer outfit.

Welp, they aren’t on sale but shipping is free so I figured I would share: Madewell’s on-point studs ($18) are my faaaaaaaaavorite everyday earrings. It’s a bit hard to tell in the photo but the surface has got a li’l peak and sloped sides that are so beautiful when they catch the light. The vintage gold color is so good too. A+ earrings.

This C9 by Champion french terry layering top ($12.94) is screaming, “throw me on after yoga and run, run as fast as you can, faster, all the way to Chipotle, order a burrito bowl and when you get back to your apartment eat it curled up on your bed before you even shower, GO NOW MY CHILD.” I am powerless; I must comply.

What a beautiful dress this is. Wow. I wish I had something to wear it to, something like a…party, a party at night, at a mansion with a fancy infinity pool, with twinkly lights and lots of cocktails. Okay I just woke up and hate everything. This long dress is $59.90 from ZARA and also comes in strawberry. Okay bye.
